Omega 3 Depression

Can Fish Oil Control Depression

Fish is sometimes called "brain food" and for good reason. Almost 60% of our brains are made up of fat, and about half of that fat is DHA omega 3 fatty acids, which are one of the key constituents in fish oils, particularly high quality ones.

Research in recent years has shown that people taking 1 gram of omega 3 fatty acids for 12 weeks experienced less of the symptoms associated with depression, such as anxiety and melancholy.

One particular Harvard psychiatrist in his book titled "The Omega-3 Connection" reveals evidence in support of fish oils for depression.

If you are already using an anti-depressant, do not discontinue your meds without talking to your doctor. You may also find that you can use fish oils in conjuction with them if you let your physician know.

So far, the evidence seems to be that fish oil can help alleviate mild to moderate depression in some instances, but serious cases of depression need special help and relying on fish oils for such cases wouldn't seem a wise decision.

In the end, we do know that fish oils -- because they contain DHA and EPA -- are important for brain development, and optimal functioning. Because depression is a condition of the brain and mind, it stands to reason that using a high quality fish oil may be beneficial.
